Eugene V. Debs on Hope

"When the mariner, sailing over tropic seas, looks for relief from his weary watch, he turns his eyes toward the southern cross, burning luridly above the tempest-vexed ocean. As the midnight approaches, the southern cross begins to bend, the whirling worlds change their places, and with starry finger-points the Almighty marks the passage of time upon the dial of the universe, and though no bell may beat the glad tidings, the lookout knows that the midnight is passing and that relief and rest are close at hand. Let the people everywhere take heart of hope, for the cross is bending, the midnight is passing, and joy cometh with the morning!"

Welcome to Visions of Spring!

This site aims to bring together the egalitarian left in an effort to develop useful vision, strategy, and analysis to move our world towards a free society.

We need a revolution for human emancipation. That much is clear. It is also clear that the internet is a powerful tool that can enable the sharing of ideas, lessons, music, art, videos, resources, and other content to aid in that goal. To that end, we aim to bring together visionary and strategic minds interested in building unity, resistance, and organization.

We'll be publishing site policies, politics, and resources in the coming days. Stay tuned while we get up and running! In the meantime, check out our common blog or our FAQ page!

Brett C. Vetterlein wrote a new blog post: Together, We Can Take Everything   2 days, 12 hours ago

This was edited from a paper for a class, so sorry about the somewhat formal citations and all that:
Opponents, and even allies, of the labor movement have announced its certain demise defiantly in recent history. There is no doubt that they are, to a degree, correct. The labor movement of the 1930s no longer exists, [...]

Nick wrote a new blog post: Capitalism’s Residue   3 weeks, 5 days ago

    I’m uneasy.
For all the literature on capitalism’s effect upon society, the left seems to lack an understanding of how it affects our psyche. We can rant and rave about capitalist alienation, community destruction, socio-economic stratification all day long but these understandings are useless without a basic understanding of how the very way we think and [...]

Today was the first day I woke up with the knowledge that my childhood hero is no longer among us. Yesterday, the fierce and beautiful light that was Howard Zinn passed away at the age of 87. I spent the night trying to figure out how one copes with a loss like this, when your [...]

“They were under the heel of the French, you know Napoleon the third and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said ‘We will serve you if you will get us free from the prince.’ True story. And so the devil said, ‘Ok it’s a deal.’ And they kicked [...]

WARNING: This is a first attempt at blogging. I would love comments and criticism.
I believe it is safe to say that the anti-war movement is decaying at an ever increasing rate. The question remains for those of us involved in activism and organizing of what do we do now? Is the movement worth reviving and [...]

Lauren Burnett commented on the blog post Harry Reid Left Unbothered   1 month, 3 weeks ago

I think Tim Wise’s facebook status said it well: “it’s absurd to equate Harry Reid’s boneheaded comment about “Negro dialect” with Trent Lott’s praise for segregationist Strom Thurmond. That’s like the difference between saying, on the one hand, “gee Tim, you don’t look Jewish,” and “Wow, those Nazis were really on to something.” One is [...]

    Great piece!
I think we should be definitely bringing up events like this because they highlight important contradictions in the “logic” of the system. The Left should definitely raise the issue that “public servants” – as the mainstream narrative loves to call them – should embody the most just ideals. The cultural progress that subsequent [...]

I’m pretty sure the majority of movies don’t pass, like the Hangover and Superbad and all those similar-themed movies. Harry Potter totally passes with flying colours :D

Recently, I decided to turn on the television Sunday morning and see what was going on in the world of the media. Upon watching the usual Sunday political shows, one headline (besides the fact that Jay Leno is switching back to the 11:35 time slot ) was about Harry Reid’s racial comment about Barack Obama. Kim Siegel commented on the blog post Hegemonic Desire and the New Order of Sex and the City   1 month, 3 weeks ago

I enjoyed reading this blog. I have never seen an episode of Sex in the City, but I have heard mixed reviews from a variety of people. The vibe I received when I saw commercials on television were, like you said, white upper-middle class women talking about/engaging in sex. Perhaps there is more depth to [...]

What do a pair of Manolo Blahnik sandals, one too many rounds of cosmopolitans, chic urban spaces, and sex (lots of it!) have to do with desire and power?’

    Hi Hue,
I think you’re exactly right. Citing what he had heard outside of the conference in Copenhagen’s streets, Chavez spoke to the link between market solutions to climate change and the destruction of the planet, saying “Let’s not change the climate, let’s change the system! And consequently we will begin to save the planet. [...]

As the UN Climate Talks  wound down with little progress made to address the most unique of crises in this time of global crises, Bolivian President Evo Morales wondered aloud that “if the leaders of countries cannot arrive in an agreement, why don’t the peoples then decide together?”
Uncomplicated and to the point, President Morales effortlessly [...]

Andy Cornell commented on the blog post Learning from the Movement for a New Society: An Interview with George Lakey   1 month, 4 weeks ago

Tom, am I right in thinking your comment refers to a Participatory Economics concept? If so, can you elaborate a little more? I’m interested because I think George’s comments about “charismatic leaders” are deeply ambivalent, and therefore really interesting and productive to discuss.
